Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
CBT is a practical and short-term form of psychotherapy, designed to equip you with the skills and strategies you need to lead a healthier, happier life. Its problem-focused, goal-oriented nature ensures that you address the issues that matter most to you.
What Is the Purpose of CBT?
In CBT, you’ll learn to examine how your thought patterns and perceptions shape your emotional and behavioral responses. The model is founded on a dynamic interaction between thoughts (“cognitions”) and behaviors, with each influencing the other. Here are the three levels of cognition:
- Conscious thoughts: These are rational, intentional thoughts made with full awareness.
- Automatic thoughts: Rapid and sometimes unconscious thoughts that may lack logical reasoning, often prevalent in those with mental health challenges.
- Schemas: Core beliefs and personal rules forged through life experiences, particularly in childhood.
Who Is It For?
CBT is particularly renowned for its efficacy in treating anxiety and depression, but its benefits extend to:
- Bipolar disorder
- Eating disorders
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Panic disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Specific phobias
- Substance use disorders
